Vitalik Buterin, 24, is a world famous genius, known across the world of technology and finance as a creator and inventor of cryptocurrency Ethereum – the second highest capitalized cryptocurrency after Bitcoin and co-founder of the influential Bitcoin Magazine. Vitalik Buterin, Background
Buterin was born on January 31, 1994 in Kolomna, Russia. His parents immigrated to Canada when he was six years old. He completed his schooling from ‘Abelard School’ in Toronto, Canada, with flying colors. He took admission in ‘University of Waterloo’, in Ontario, Canada in 2012; where his core subjects were Computer Programming, Economics and Mathematics.
Buterin came to know about Bitcoin in 2011 and slowly his interest grew in the pioneering cryptocurrency. He then learnt about the intricacies of cryptocurrency Bitcoin from his father, who is a computer scientist. After that he started writing for an online blog ‘Bitcoin Weekly’. In September 2011, he came into contact with Mihai Alisie, who offered to Buterin, a position as the first co-founder, and as a leading writer and contributor for a magazine on crypto currencies; and thus ‘Bitcoin Magazine’ came into existence in its online version in late 2011. It began publishing its print edition since early 2012. Buterin continued to write until mid-2014 for the magazine, when it was purchased by BTC Media, a US based company. After that, Buterin held a position on the editorial board of ‘Ledger’ a publication on the subjects of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology. He also contributed for the development of many coding software projects like coding for the privacy-minded ‘Dark Wallet’ and the marketplace ‘Egora’.
Buterin realized that crypto projects were taking up much of his time, so finally he dropped his studies mid-way in 2014. He went around the world and studied several crypto projects. In his own words, “Education is ultimately much more than simply memorizing individual facts, or even learning individual concepts. [What] matters most: learning how to think, learning how to reason and learning how to learn.”
In November 2013 Buterin wrote the Ethereum white paper revealing his intention to launch another cryptocurrency. After winning $100,000 as Thiel Fellowship Award, in 2014, he proposed, developed and cofounded ‘The Ethereum Organization’ with his cofounder Joe Lubin, for the launch of a new online platform ‘Ethereum.’ Buterin started working fulltime for creating cryptocurrency employing single blockchain technology. A crowdfunding campaign was launched on July 22, 2014 that offered 2,000 Ethereum tokens for $620. More than $18m were raised, being the most successful crowdfunding at that time. These funds of $18m are now managed by the ‘Ethereum Foundation’, a non-profit organization, based in Switzerland.
‘Ethereum’ cryptocurrency (ETH) was launched on 30 July, 2015. ETH broke the $1,000 mark for the first time on January 4, 2018 and touched a lifetime high of $1,417.38 on January 10, 2018 at coindesk.com, where it is currently being traded at $871.76 as on March 1, 2018. Total valuation of ETH currently exceeds $0.5 trillion and Buterin himself holds less than 0.4% of the total supply of ETH. ETH is currently being traded on 87 online exchanges worldwide.
Buterin collaborated with many other developers to develop ETH, but the coding for ETH was set by Buterin himself. Currently Buterin is working for the development of various technologies like ‘Casper,’ ‘Plasma.io,’ ‘Raiden,’ and ‘Sharding’ aimed to tackle scalability problem and help in the field of space, in collaboration with many developers.
Awards & Recognitions
Buterin participated in a high school programming competition titled ‘International Olympiad in Informatics’ in late 2011 for programming the code for simulated robots that would fight with one another. He stood third in the competition and was honored with a bronze medal in the in 2012. On being asked by his teacher about his strategy in the project, he simply replied, “I gave each agent a utility function and let them independently act to maximize their own objectives”. And that has been his philosophy of life.
Buterin was selected for Thiel Fellowship Award in 2014, an award amounting to $100,000. He also won the World Technology Award in IT Software Category in 2014. He was placed by ‘Fortune’, a multinational business magazine, in their ‘List of 40 under 40’ in 2016.
