Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg, better known online by his nickname PewDiePie, 28, is a Swedish web-based comedian and producer of quirky videos. He is blessed with indisputable comic talent and has become a superstar because of his commentaries and vlogs. He is also known as the ‘King of YouTube’, because of his channel PewDiePie, being the #1 channel on YouTube – having over 61.3 million and over 17.2 billion views.
Kjellberg was born on October 24, 1989, in Gothenburg, Sweden. He completed his schooling in 2008 from ‘Goteborgs Hogre Samskola’ in Gothenburg. During childhood, he was interested in arts. During high school, his became obsessed with video games. He got admission in 2008 in Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, for studying Industrial Economics and Technology Management. He dropped his studies midway in 2011 as he found his studies ‘boring’. Having failed to earn an apprenticeship, he started selling prints of his Photoshop art projects; worked on a tennis court, at a hotdog kiosk and at the harbor, in order to purchase a computer for developing his channel. In July 2013 Kjellberg moved to Brighton, a UK seaside town, where he currently resides with his girlfriend Marzia Bisognin – an Italian YouTube personality. He likes going sailing, playing golf and tennis. He considers himself as an ‘Agnostic atheist’. His height is 5’-9” (1.75M).
Kjellberg originally opened an account with YouTube channel, under registered name ‘PewDie’, in 2006 — “Pew” represents the sound of lasers and ‘Die’ represents death. Later his interest in this channel subsided. He again returned to YouTube and opened a new account called, ‘PewDiePie’ on 29 April 2010 and uploaded his video commentary ‘Let’s Play’. He also began posting vlogs w.e.f. 2 September 2011 being uploaded every week under the title of ‘Fridays with PewDiePie.’ PewDiePie reached the landmark of 1 million subscribers in July 2012, 2 million in September 2012, 5 million in February 2012, 6 million in April 2013, 10 million in July 2013, and 15 million subscribers in November 2013. On August 15, 2013, PewDiePie became the most-subscribed YouTube channel. The channel lost #1 position for a total of 46 days in 2013 to another YouTube channel ‘Spotlight’ but it regained this position on 22nd December, 2013. Since then, it has been holding this prestigious position. Kjellberg addresses his fans as ‘Bros’ and refers his subscribers as ‘Bro Army’. He is praised for producing genuine and unfiltered content with “charismatic narration”. On some occasions, due to his enthusiasm, he went abrasive and met with controversies.
Kjellberg uploaded a video on 10 December 2016 titled “Can this video hit 1 million likes?” – He appealed to YouTubers to watch and like the video and the video received over 3.2 million likes, and became the 70th-most-liked video on YouTube. On 24 December 2016, he uploaded a follow-up video, titled “Can this video get 1 million dislikes?” – He appealed to YouTubers to watch and dislike the video and this video received over 2.8 million dislikes, and became the 4th-most-disliked video on YouTube. On 28 January 2017, he uploaded another video, titled “Can this video get 1 million comments?” – He appealed to YouTubers to watch and comment upon the video and this video received over 5.3 million comments, and became the most commented video on YouTube.
Kjellberg collaborated with ‘Maker Studios’ — a talent network for video-makers in 2012. In August 2014, he alongside Maker Studios launched a PewDiePie app for iPhone. Later Disney purchased Maker Studios but the collaboration went on. Disney ended their collaboration with Kjellberg on 13 February 2017 due to production of some controversial videos by him, although Kjellberg had publically apologized for the controversies through uploading his video ‘PewDiePie -My Response’ in February 2017.
Kjellberg collaborated with Canadian game developer ‘Outerminds’ on 24 September 2015 and released his video game ‘PewDiePie: Legend of the Brofist’ on iOS and Android. On 29 September 2016, another game titled ‘PewDiePie’s Tuber Simulator’ was released on iOS and Android. This game reached the #1 spot on the App Stores within one week.

On 8 December 2016, PewDiePie channel attained the landmark of 50 million subscribers, and on 18 December 2016; Kjellberg was honoured with a ‘Ruby Play Button’ from YouTube authorities.
Forbes announced Kjellberg as the Number One in its ‘List of Highest-Paid YouTube Stars’ in December 2016, with an astronomical $15 million annual earnings. But in its same list released in 2017, he was ranked down to # 6 with $12 million annual earnings.
He was named one of ‘The 30 Most Influential People on the Internet’ of 2015 by ‘Time’. He was ranked as #1 ‘Famechanger’ by ‘Variety’ – a famous weekly American entertainment magazine, in its ‘Famechangers’ Year 2015 issue.
He was named one of ‘The World’s 100 Most Influential People’ of 2016 by ‘Time’. Kjellberg won the award as Swedish Social Star and his show ‘PewDiePie’ won the award as Most Popular Social Show in May 2013, at ‘Starcount Social Stars Awards Program’ in Singapore.
Kjellberg began a “Water Campaign” charity, in July 2013, and with the help of his fans an amount of $446,462 was donated for the cause of clean drinking water. In June 2014, he raised and donated over $6,30,000 to ‘Save the Children’ – a UK based non-profit charitable organization that supplies blankets, food, school books and shelter to children worldwide.
Kjellberg hosted in December 2016, a livestream program with ‘Revelmode Creators’ and with help from ‘Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’, raised a total of over $1.3 million that was donated to ‘RED’, a charity committed to help HIV/AIDS patients in Africa.
Kjellberg opines that in UK, he is able to live in general anonymity and does not like to be called “famous” and that is why he has not moved to the United States. He admits, “Anytime I’m there, people are constantly patting you on the back, telling you how great you are.” He added, “I started YouTube because I was bored, and not to become famous.”
Kjellberg is living a life full of contentment. In his own words, “I make more than I need from YouTube.”
